'Know Pain Know Gain'
Beyond the biomedical paradigm: A new lens on pain
Did you know that fear and threat of pain impacts many elite athletes just as negatively as everyone else?
John’s session at the forthcoming Master Sessions Less Pain Better Performance event in November will explore how trainers can work with athletes and performance professionals to reduce pain, “beyond the biomedical paradigm.”
John said: “Understanding contemporary pain science can help coaches and support staff help athletes and performers with their pain experience in ways beyond traditional psychological skills training.”
Less Pain Better Performance is a four-day online program aimed at anyone training others to achieve their personal best.
John looks forward to introducing his research and transformative approach, enabling participants to…
- Better appreciate that athletes and performers have no greater pain tolerance or resilience than the general population: a crucial factor in achieving peak performance.
- Generate a sense of safety in athletes and performers who are experiencing pain in order to improve their performance.
- Learn to apply mental skills training, such as visualisation and self-talk, to help athletes and performers recognise and manage aversive internal experiences.
